Albumin, Random Urine with Creatinine

Overview:
Albumin is a protein that healthy kidneys keep in the blood rather than letting through into urine. When the filtering units in the kidney are damaged, small amounts of albumin begin to leak across, and that often happens before any symptoms appear or standard blood tests change. Measuring albumin against creatinine in the same sample corrects for how dilute the urine is, which is what makes a single random sample usable rather than requiring a full day's collection. This ratio is a standard part of monitoring for people with diabetes or high blood pressure. A single raised result is normally repeated, since exercise, fever and infection can all raise it temporarily.
