Apolipoprotein A-1

Overview:
Apolipoprotein A-1 is the principal protein component of HDL, the particle that carries cholesterol away from tissues and back to the liver. Because each HDL particle carries apolipoprotein A-1, measuring it gives an indication of how many of those particles are present, rather than how much cholesterol they are carrying. Some clinicians prefer this as a way of assessing the protective side of the lipid picture, particularly when standard cholesterol results are difficult to interpret. It is often considered alongside apolipoprotein B, which reflects the particles associated with higher risk, and the two are sometimes compared as a ratio.
