C-Peptide

Overview:
When the pancreas makes insulin, it releases C-peptide at the same time and in the same quantity. C-peptide is cleared more slowly and, importantly, is not present in injected insulin. That makes it a useful way to measure how much insulin a person is producing themselves, including in people already receiving insulin treatment. It is used when distinguishing between types of diabetes, when investigating unexplained low blood sugar, and when assessing how much pancreatic function remains. Results depend heavily on the blood glucose at the time of the sample, so the two are interpreted together.
