Ceruloplasmin
- Overview:
-
Ceruloplasmin is made by the liver and carries the majority of the copper circulating in blood. Its main clinical use is in investigating Wilson disease, an inherited condition in which copper is not cleared properly and accumulates in the liver, brain and eyes; in that condition ceruloplasmin is typically low. It can also be low in severe liver disease and in rare copper deficiency states. Ceruloplasmin behaves as an acute phase protein, meaning it rises with inflammation, infection, pregnancy and estrogen use, so a normal result does not exclude a problem and results are read alongside copper measurements.
