Chlamydia/Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- Overview:
-
This test looks for genetic material from Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacteria responsible for chlamydia and gonorrhea. Detecting genetic material allows an infection to be identified before symptoms develop, which matters because both frequently cause no symptoms at all. Untreated, either can spread to the reproductive organs and affect fertility, and both are treatable with antibiotics once identified. Screening is recommended for people who are sexually active, with frequency depending on age, sexual history and other risk factors. A negative result reflects the sample tested and does not rule out an infection acquired very recently.
