Coenzyme Q10, Total

Overview:
Coenzyme Q10 is a compound found in nearly every cell, where it takes part in the chain of reactions that produce energy in mitochondria. It also acts as an antioxidant. The body makes most of what it needs, with a smaller contribution from diet. Levels can be lower in some inherited mitochondrial disorders and have been reported to fall with statin treatment, since statins act on part of the same synthetic pathway. Testing is used mainly to assess status in those situations or to check the effect of supplementation. Evidence for routine supplementation in otherwise healthy people remains limited.
