Complete Blood Count (CBC) with Differential/Platelet

Overview:
A complete blood count examines the three main cell types in blood. Red cells carry oxygen, and their number, size and hemoglobin content can indicate anemia and suggest its cause. White cells defend against infection, and the differential separates them into neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils, a pattern that can point toward infection, inflammation or other processes. Platelets are involved in clotting. Because it covers so much ground cheaply, the CBC is used both as a general check and when investigating specific symptoms such as fatigue, fever, bruising or recurrent infection. Results are interpreted as a pattern rather than value by value.
