Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)
- Overview:
-
The comprehensive metabolic panel groups fourteen measurements that together describe how some of the body's core systems are running. It covers fasting glucose, the electrolytes sodium, potassium, chloride and carbon dioxide, kidney markers including urea nitrogen, creatinine and estimated filtration rate, liver markers including ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin, and the blood proteins albumin and total protein along with calcium. It is one of the most frequently ordered panels in medicine, used as a general check, before and after starting certain medications, and when investigating a wide range of symptoms. Individual results are read together rather than in isolation.
