Creatine Kinase (CK), Total

Overview:
Creatine kinase is an enzyme found mainly in skeletal muscle, heart muscle and the brain. When muscle cells are damaged, the enzyme leaks into the bloodstream and the level rises. The most common uses today are investigating muscle pain or weakness, assessing muscle symptoms in people taking statins, and identifying rhabdomyolysis, in which large amounts of muscle break down. Strenuous exercise, injections and recent injury all raise the result, sometimes substantially, so recent activity is taken into account. Heart muscle damage is now assessed with troponin rather than total creatine kinase.
