Epstein-Barr Virus Antibody Panel
- Overview:
-
Epstein-Barr virus is extremely common, and most people are infected at some point, often without noticing. In adolescents and young adults it more often causes infectious mononucleosis. This panel measures three antibodies whose combination indicates timing: VCA IgM appears early and fades within weeks, VCA IgG appears early and persists for life, and EBNA IgG develops only weeks to months after infection and then persists. VCA IgM with no EBNA IgG suggests a recent infection, while VCA IgG with EBNA IgG and no IgM indicates past exposure. The virus stays in the body permanently after infection.
