Epstein-Barr Virus Early Antigen D Antibody (IgG)

Overview:
Early antigen D is a protein Epstein-Barr virus produces when it is actively replicating. Antibodies to it typically appear during an active infection and fade over the months that follow, though in a proportion of people they persist or reappear later. This test is not usually a first step. It is added when a standard antibody panel leaves the picture unclear, or where reactivation of the virus is being considered. Because these antibodies can persist in healthy people without any active infection, a positive result is interpreted alongside the rest of the panel and the clinical picture.
