Estradiol

Overview:
Estradiol is the most active of the estrogens and the main one produced during the reproductive years, mostly by the ovaries and in smaller amounts by the adrenal glands, fat tissue and the testes. It drives the development of the uterine lining, contributes to bone density and affects cholesterol handling. Levels change substantially across the menstrual cycle, so a result cannot be interpreted without knowing which day of the cycle the sample was taken. It is measured when investigating irregular or absent periods, in fertility assessment and treatment, and around the menopause transition.
