Fibrinogen
- Overview:
-
Fibrinogen is a protein made by the liver and converted into fibrin, the mesh that holds a blood clot together, at the final stage of clotting. Low levels occur in inherited deficiencies, in severe liver disease, and in disseminated intravascular coagulation, where clotting factors are consumed faster than they can be replaced. Fibrinogen is also an acute phase protein, meaning it rises with inflammation, infection, pregnancy and smoking, and raised levels have been associated with cardiovascular risk. Because of that dual role, results are interpreted according to the question being asked.
