FSH and LH
- Overview:
-
FSH and LH are both released by the pituitary gland and act on the ovaries or testes. FSH drives follicle development and sperm production, while LH triggers ovulation and stimulates testosterone production. Because they work together, the relationship between them is often more informative than either alone. A raised ratio of LH to FSH is one of the patterns associated with polycystic ovary syndrome, while both being high suggests the ovaries or testes are not responding, and both being low points toward the pituitary or hypothalamus. In women, cycle timing affects both results.
