Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT)
- Overview:
-
Gamma glutamyl transferase is an enzyme found in the liver, bile ducts, pancreas and kidneys. Its most common use is alongside alkaline phosphatase, which can rise from either liver or bone conditions. Because GGT rises with liver and bile duct problems but not with bone disease, the two together indicate where the problem lies. GGT is also sensitive to alcohol and to a number of medications, which makes it useful in assessing alcohol related liver disease, though a raised level has many other causes. It is generally interpreted alongside the other liver enzymes rather than alone.
