Growth Hormone (GH)

Overview:
Growth hormone is produced by the pituitary gland and affects growth in childhood and the handling of muscle, fat and bone throughout life. It is released in short pulses, mostly overnight, and levels between those pulses can be very low even in people with normal production. That makes a single random measurement difficult to interpret on its own. For this reason, assessment of growth hormone excess or deficiency usually relies on stimulation or suppression testing, or on IGF-1, which is more stable through the day. This test is generally used as part of that wider assessment.
