Hemoglobinopathy Evaluation
- Overview:
-
Most adult hemoglobin is a single type, hemoglobin A, with small amounts of hemoglobin A2 and, in adults, very little hemoglobin F. Inherited conditions change that pattern. This evaluation separates the hemoglobin types present and measures how much of each there is, identifying variants such as hemoglobin S, which causes sickle cell trait and disease, and hemoglobin C and E. A raised hemoglobin A2 is the characteristic finding in beta thalassemia trait. Red cell indices from a blood count are included, since small red cells are often what prompts the test, and a pattern interpretation is reported.
