Hepatic Function Panel
- Overview:
-
This panel groups the standard measurements used to assess the liver. ALT and AST are enzymes released when liver cells are damaged, while alkaline phosphatase is associated more with the bile ducts. Bilirubin is reported as total, direct and indirect, and the split between them helps distinguish where a problem lies, since indirect bilirubin rises with red cell breakdown while direct bilirubin rises with bile flow obstruction. Albumin and total protein reflect the liver's manufacturing capacity over a longer period. The pattern across these results is far more informative than any single value.
