Human Transforming Growth Factor beta 1 (TGF-b1)
- Overview:
-
Transforming growth factor beta 1 is a signaling protein that helps regulate how cells grow, how the immune system is restrained, and how tissue repairs itself after injury. It plays a central role in fibrosis, the scarring that can follow chronic injury in organs such as the liver, lungs and kidneys. Because it is involved in so many processes, an isolated result is difficult to interpret in general practice, and the test is used mainly in specialist assessment and research. Platelets release TGF-beta 1 when blood clots, so sample handling strongly affects the measured level.
