IgE

Overview:
Immunoglobulin E is the antibody class most involved in allergic responses. It is present in small amounts normally and tends to be higher in people with allergic conditions such as hay fever, asthma and eczema, as well as in certain parasitic infections. This test measures the total amount across all specificities, so it indicates that allergic activity may be present without showing what is causing it; identifying specific triggers requires allergen-specific IgE testing. Total IgE can be normal in people with genuine allergies and raised in people without symptoms, so it is interpreted alongside the clinical picture.
