IGF Binding Protein 3 (IGFBP-3)

Overview:
IGF binding protein 3 carries the majority of the IGF-1 circulating in blood and is itself produced in response to growth hormone. Because the two rise and fall together, measuring both can give a clearer picture of growth hormone activity than IGF-1 alone, particularly in children being assessed for growth problems. IGFBP-3 is less affected by nutritional state than IGF-1, which can make it more reliable in some situations. Levels vary considerably with age, rising through childhood and declining in adulthood, so results are always compared against age-matched ranges.
