Iodine, Random Urine

Overview:
Iodine is an essential mineral the thyroid uses to make its hormones. Most of what you take in is excreted in urine, so a urine measurement reflects recent intake rather than long-term stores. Dietary sources include iodized salt, dairy, seafood and seaweed, with seaweed capable of containing very large amounts. Both insufficient and excessive iodine can disturb thyroid function, which is why the test is used at either end. Because intake varies day to day and the result reflects only recent consumption, a single random sample gives a rough indication rather than a definitive status.
