Iodine, Serum/Plasma

Overview:
Iodine is a trace mineral the thyroid gland uses to produce thyroid hormones, and the body cannot make it, so it has to come from diet. Blood iodine reflects recent intake and current exposure. It is measured when insufficient intake is a concern, for example with restricted diets that exclude dairy, seafood and iodized salt, and also when excess is possible, which can follow large seaweed intake, some supplements, or iodine-containing contrast media and medications. Both extremes can disturb thyroid function, so results are interpreted alongside thyroid hormone measurements rather than alone.
