Iron, TIBC and Ferritin Panel
- Overview:
-
Iron deficiency develops in stages, and these four measurements capture different points in that sequence. Ferritin reflects stored iron and usually falls first, before anything else changes. Serum iron measures what is currently circulating, total iron binding capacity reflects how much carrying capacity is available, and transferrin saturation expresses the proportion of that capacity in use. Taken together they distinguish iron deficiency from iron overload and from the pattern seen in chronic inflammation. Because ferritin also rises with inflammation, results are sometimes read alongside a marker such as CRP.
