Lead (Venous)
- Overview:
-
This test measures how much lead is present in your blood at the time the sample is taken. Lead has no known biological role in the body. Common sources of exposure include dust and paint chips in homes built before 1978, older plumbing, contaminated soil, and certain occupations and hobbies such as welding, indoor firing ranges, stained glass work and some pottery glazes. Lead exposure often causes no noticeable symptoms, which is why testing is used to identify it. The sample is taken from a vein. A venous sample can be used for initial testing, and is also the method used to confirm an elevated result from a finger-stick test.
