LH
- Overview:
-
Luteinizing hormone is released by the pituitary gland. In women a sharp surge in LH triggers ovulation roughly midway through the menstrual cycle, which is the signal that ovulation predictor kits detect. In men, LH stimulates the testes to produce testosterone. Because the pituitary increases output when the ovaries or testes are underperforming, a high LH with low sex hormones points to those organs, while low LH with low sex hormones points toward the pituitary or hypothalamus. LH is usually interpreted alongside FSH, and in women the day of the cycle affects the result considerably.
