Magnesium (Serum)
- Overview:
-
Magnesium is a mineral involved in an enormous number of processes, including muscle and nerve signaling, heart rhythm, blood pressure regulation and energy production. Low levels can occur with poor intake, long-term alcohol use, some diuretics and proton pump inhibitors, and conditions causing diarrhea or malabsorption, and they can cause muscle cramps, irregular heart rhythm and low calcium or potassium that will not correct until the magnesium does. Most magnesium is inside cells and in bone, with only about one percent in the blood, so a serum result can look normal while body stores are depleted.
