Molybdenum, Serum or Plasma
- Overview:
-
Molybdenum is a trace element required by a small number of enzymes, including those that process sulfur-containing amino acids and break down certain drugs and toxins. The amounts needed are tiny, and it is present in legumes, grains and nuts, so dietary deficiency essentially does not occur in people eating normally. The situations where it is measured are narrow: long-term intravenous nutrition without adequate supplementation, suspected industrial exposure, and investigation of rare inherited enzyme disorders. Excess molybdenum can interfere with copper handling, which is one reason it may be checked alongside copper.
