MTHFR Genetic Test

Overview:
The MTHFR gene codes for an enzyme that converts folate into the active form the body uses. Two common variants reduce how efficiently that enzyme works, and people carrying them may have somewhat higher homocysteine levels as a result. These variants are common, present in a substantial proportion of the population, and most people who carry them have no health problems from doing so. Professional guidelines generally do not recommend routine MTHFR testing, including in the assessment of recurrent pregnancy loss or clotting disorders, because the result rarely changes management. The report includes an interpretation of the variants found.
