Mycoplasma genitalium rRNA TMA

Overview:
Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually transmitted bacterium recognized more recently than chlamydia and gonorrhea. It can cause inflammation of the urethra in men and of the cervix in women, and it is associated with pelvic inflammatory disease. Like the more familiar infections it frequently causes no symptoms at all. This test detects the organism's genetic material, which is necessary because it is extremely difficult to grow in a laboratory. It is commonly ordered when symptoms persist despite treatment for chlamydia and gonorrhea. Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem with this organism, which affects treatment choices.
