Myeloperoxidase Antibody (MPO)

Overview:
Myeloperoxidase antibodies belong to a group called antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies, or ANCA, which target proteins inside neutrophils. They are associated with several forms of small vessel vasculitis, where inflammation damages blood vessel walls and can affect the kidneys, lungs, nerves and skin. MPO antibodies are found particularly in microscopic polyangiitis and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, while a related antibody to proteinase 3 is more associated with granulomatosis with polyangiitis. Testing is usually prompted by a combination of kidney, lung or systemic symptoms, and results are interpreted alongside the clinical picture and often a biopsy.
