Procollagen Type I Intact N Terminal Propeptide

Overview:
Bone is constantly broken down and rebuilt. When new bone is formed, type I collagen is assembled and a fragment called P1NP is released into the blood, so the level indicates how actively bone is being built. It is the counterpart to CTx, which reflects breakdown, and the two are often measured together to show which side of the balance is dominant. P1NP is most established in monitoring osteoporosis treatment: bone-building medications raise it, while medications that slow bone loss lower it, and either change appears within months, well before a bone density scan would show anything.
