Protein, Total, Random Urine with Creatinine

Overview:
Healthy kidneys let very little protein through into urine. When the filtering units are damaged, protein begins to leak across, and the amount broadly reflects how much damage there is. Measuring protein against creatinine in the same sample corrects for how concentrated the urine is, which is what makes a single random sample a reasonable substitute for collecting urine over a full day. This test captures all proteins, unlike an albumin to creatinine ratio, which measures albumin specifically and is more sensitive to early damage. Exercise, fever and infection can raise protein temporarily.
