Overview:

This test measures how strongly your immune cells respond to proteins specific to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Because those proteins are not present in the BCG vaccine or in most environmental mycobacteria, the result is not affected by prior BCG vaccination, which is the main advantage over the traditional skin test. It also requires only one visit rather than two. The panel includes control results that confirm the test worked correctly. A positive result indicates infection but does not distinguish latent infection, where the bacteria are dormant and the person is not infectious, from active disease, which requires further assessment.
