Renal Function Panel
- Overview:
-
This panel groups the measurements used to assess kidney function and the balances the kidneys maintain. Creatinine and urea nitrogen are waste products the kidneys clear, and an estimated glomerular filtration rate calculated from creatinine indicates overall filtering capacity. The electrolytes sodium, potassium, chloride and carbon dioxide reflect the kidneys' role in fluid and acid balance. Calcium and phosphorus are included because their regulation depends on kidney function and is often disturbed in kidney disease. Albumin and glucose complete the picture. Results are read as a pattern, and a single creatinine is interpreted alongside age, sex and muscle mass.
