RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) - Syphilis Screening

Overview:
RPR detects antibodies produced in response to material released by damaged cells during syphilis infection rather than antibodies to the bacterium itself. It is a screening test, and because those antibodies can also appear in pregnancy, autoimmune conditions and some infections, a reactive result needs a confirmatory treponemal test before syphilis is established. Syphilis progresses through stages and can be symptom-free for long periods while remaining transmissible and capable of causing serious complications. The RPR level is also used to follow treatment, since a falling titer indicates a response.
