Sm and Sm/RNP Antibodies

Overview:
These antibodies target small protein and RNA complexes inside the cell nucleus, and they belong to the group of extractable nuclear antigen antibodies. Anti-Sm is one of the most specific findings in systemic lupus erythematosus, so a positive result strongly supports that diagnosis, although it is present in only a minority of people with lupus. Antibodies to Sm/RNP are found in lupus as well, and high levels of RNP antibodies in particular are characteristic of mixed connective tissue disease. Testing usually follows a positive antinuclear antibody screen rather than being requested first.
