STD Screening
- Overview:
-
This panel brings together the tests usually offered in a routine sexual health screen. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are detected by looking for their genetic material, syphilis is screened with RPR, HIV with a test that detects both antibodies and the p24 antigen, and hepatitis B and hepatitis C are covered by surface antigen and antibody tests respectively. Most of these infections frequently cause no symptoms, which is why screening rather than waiting for symptoms is recommended. Each infection has its own window period after exposure, so very recent exposures may not yet be detectable and repeat testing is sometimes advised.
