T3 Reverse, LC/MS/MS

Overview:
The thyroid produces mostly T4, which is converted in tissues either into T3, the active hormone, or into reverse T3, which is inactive. The body shifts toward reverse T3 during serious illness, starvation, and periods of physical stress, a pattern sometimes described as non-thyroidal illness. That is the main reason reverse T3 rises, and it happens in people whose thyroid is working normally. Because of this, professional guidelines generally do not recommend reverse T3 for diagnosing or managing thyroid conditions, and its use is largely confined to specialist assessment of unusual thyroid function results.
