T4 (Thyroxine), Total

Overview:
The thyroid is a gland in the neck that produces hormones affecting metabolism. T4, or thyroxine, is the main hormone it releases. Most T4 in the blood is bound to carrier proteins, and only a small unbound fraction is available to tissues. Because the level of those carrier proteins can change during pregnancy and with certain medications, a total T4 on its own can be difficult to interpret. This test also reports the Free T4 Index, a calculated value that adjusts for that effect. Thyroid results are generally interpreted together, commonly alongside TSH, rather than from a single value.
