Thyroglobulin Antibody

Overview:
Thyroglobulin is the protein the thyroid uses as a scaffold for building its hormones. Antibodies against it are common in autoimmune thyroid conditions, particularly Hashimoto's thyroiditis, though thyroid peroxidase antibodies are usually the more informative marker there. The other reason this test matters is technical: in people monitored after treatment for thyroid cancer, thyroglobulin is used as a tumor marker, and the presence of these antibodies interferes with that measurement, making it read falsely low. For that reason the antibody is measured alongside thyroglobulin whenever it is used for monitoring.
