Thyroglobulin Panel
- Overview:
-
Thyroglobulin is produced only by thyroid tissue. After the thyroid has been removed and treated for thyroid cancer, there should be very little left, so a measurable or rising level can indicate remaining or returning tissue. That makes it the standard marker for monitoring. Thyroglobulin antibodies are measured at the same time because they interfere with the assay and can make thyroglobulin read falsely low, which could otherwise be mistaken for a good result. Where antibodies are present, their own trend is sometimes followed instead. This panel is for monitoring rather than initial diagnosis.
