Urinalysis
- Overview:
-
A urinalysis examines urine for a range of substances that should be absent or present only in small amounts. Protein and blood can indicate kidney damage or urinary tract problems, glucose can point to diabetes, and ketones appear with fasting, low carbohydrate intake or uncontrolled diabetes. Nitrites and leukocyte esterase suggest a urinary tract infection, though a culture is needed to confirm one and identify the organism. Specific gravity reflects how concentrated the urine is, and pH can be relevant to kidney stones. This is a macroscopic analysis, without microscopic examination of the sediment.
